Pokal fixtures for Saturday concluded with three evening games. Borussia Dortmund overcame Regionalliga Nord opponents Phönix Lübeck on a 4-1 scoreline. Elsewhere, Holstein Kiel came from behind to win 3-2 and break Alemannia Aachen hearts, while Arminia Bielefeld won 2-0 to advance past Hannover 96.
Alemannia Aachen 2 – Holstein Kiel 3
The newly promoted Bundesliga side hit the front in the 16th-minute thanks to Shuto Machino’s hard work. The forward initiated the move by collecting possession and laying it off before continuing his run. Finn Porath’s cross was met by the Japanese youngster who nodded home. The lead was extinguished before the half-hour as Aachen replied. Heinz’s corner met the head of captain Mika Hanraths to send the yellow-clad home fans into a frenzy.
An upset was on the cards when Aachen forged a 2-1 lead on the hour mark. Nils Winter emerged with possession from the duel with Tymoteusz Puchacz on the right. Reaching the byline, the full-back found Charlison Benschop centrally whose powerful effort ripped past Timon Weiner between the Kiel posts.
However, Kiel refused to lie down and Lasse Rosenboom proved to be the star of the show. The substitute made an instant impact in the 82nd-minute, converting after a scramble in the box caused by Lewis Holtby’s corner. In the first minute of additional time at the Tivoli Stadion, Rosenboom bagged the second goal of his game-winning brace. Aachen goalkeeper, Marcel Johnen, wiped out his own defender to make space for the Kiel striker to head home. Kiel avoiding a Pokal shock for the ages at the death.
Arminia Bielefeld 2 – Hannover 0
The visitors were first to draw blood after quarter of an hour and it won’t make for pleasant viewing in the match review for Marcel Halstenberg. The veteran defender coughed up possession to Marius Wörl, with acres of space to leave Andre Becker with the easiest of tap-ins.
Bielefeld led 2-0 seven minutes later, as Kaito Mizuta cut the ball back for Louis Oppie. The 22-year-old picked out the bottom right with a powerful left-footed drive. Hannover struggled to get a foothold in the game and bow out early while Bielefeld advance to the next round.
