Roy Keane has criticised Tottenham‘s lacklustre defending during their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa as ‘Spursy’ after they went from a goal ahead to losing.

Having taken an early lead through Giovani Lo Celso, Spurs failed to capitalise on their dominance as they missed out on an important three points – with Ollie Watkins sealing the deal with a winner in the second half.

Speaking after the match on Sky Sports, pundit and former Arsenal star Karen Carney said Tottenham made it ‘far too easy’ for their opponents.

On Ollie Watkins’ winning goal, Carney pointed out that there was ‘no one pressing them’ despite some good skill from the Villa forward.

Roy Keane was quick to agree: ‘Really poor defending from Spurs. You’ve got to get tight and be aggressive, they’ve just switched off at the wrong time.

He continued: ‘Lovely goal from Villa, but defensively from Spurs… really Spursy’.

Tottenham have now faced their third defeat on the trot in the Premier League, despite a winning start to the 2023-24 campaign.

However, Ange Postecoglou’s side have faced the wrath of injuries, including Rodrigo Bentancur who was substituted off early in the first half after a challenge from Matty Cash.

Michael Dawson added: ‘If you give teams that are good in attack a little bit of an edge, an opportunity, they’ll take it. Ollie Watkins does that.

Giovani Lo Celso fired his side ahead early in the game – a much needed confidence boost for a diminished Tottenham squad.

Into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Pau Torres nodded in a header from Douglas Luiz’ cross into the box, allowing the Spaniard a simple header into the net.

With everything to play for in the second half, the visitors pushed hard and secured a second, winning goal through Ollie Watkins.

Following some one-two along the edge of the box with ex-Leicester star Youri Tielemans, Watkins coolly slotted home to secure all three points for his visiting side in the capital.
