Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Coventry: Owls shame as supporters boo racism victim Kasey Palmer… as Djeidi Gassama nets late equaliser to send the FA Cup fourth-round tie to a replay

Mark Robins could not hide his anger after Coventry winger Kasey Palmer was booed by a section of Sheffield Wednesday fans on his return to Hillsborough.

Six days earlier, 27-year-old Palmer had been racially abused during the Sly Blues’ 2-1 Championship win.

Robins subsequently vowed his team would walk off the field in the future if any of his players suffers racist abuse.

Thankfully there was not, but Palmer was still booed and jeered by some home supporters and Robins was almost beside himself afterwards.

He fumed: ‘The reaction was a disgrace – people need to have a look at themselves. 

‘What are they doing? It’s ridiculous. It’s a joke – an absolute joke!

‘We’re in a game where the players work really hard, they hone their talent and come out to entertain people. It shouldn’t happen.

‘Kasey’s a football player with family and wants to play and enjoy his football like everyone else. Then you’ve got these idiots, absolute clowns.’

Robins’ players took the knee before kick-off, which drew a smattering of boos from home supporters.

That prompted an angry response from the 4,000 visiting fans, who chanted ‘you racist b******s, you know what you are’.

However, the huge visiting contingent were cheering when on the stroke of half-time thanks to debutant Victor Torp’s stunner.

The Danish midfielder rifled home from nearly 30 yards on the stroke of half-time, but Djeidi Gassama fired home coolly with six minutes remaining.

He collected a neat pass from captain Barry Bannan and rifled home a low, right-foot shot past Ben Wilson.

Further chances came and went for both sides as they went in search of a winner.

Owls boss Danny Rohl played down the abuse suffered by Palmer, saying: ‘We cannot accept this, we will not accept this.

‘But today for me it was a normal emotional football game, some hard duels about the ball, some reactions and this is football, hopefully the normal football we want.’
