Erik ten Hag was feeling generous after Manchester United‘s FA Cup fourth round victory over Newport as he presented opposition manager Graham Coughlan with a luxury bottle of wine.

United avoided an FA Cup upset against the League Two sides as late goals from Antony and Rasmus Hojlund secured a 4-2 victory and safe passage to the next round of the tournament.

Newport momentarily caused concern of a possible comeback having initially come back from two-goals down before losing.

Both sides are at opposite ends of the English football pyramid and Ten Hag wanted to show his appreciation for the Newport boss following an enthralling six-goal encounter at Rodney Parade.

Gifts between managers has become a tradition reserved for special occasions and a historic debut meeting between United and Newport saw Ten Hag supply a present on behalf of the club.

After completing his media duties, Ten Hag walked out pitchside where Coughlan was being questioned by members of the press and shared a warming exchange with the Newport chief.

He proceeded to explain that United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson – once known for doing the same tradition during his iconic reign – helped choose the luxury red wine being handed over.

The bottle of Antinori Tignanello is advertised on some UK retailers at over £200 and is described as ‘one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region not to use white grapes’.

A beaming Ten Hag shook hands with McLoughlan and began: ‘We have a small gift for you.’

Dublin-born Coughlan jokingly responds: ‘Brilliant. You know I don’t drink wine, I drink Budweiser.

Ten Hag continues: Really, Budweiser? American beer? But this is a really very good one chosen by Sir Alex [Ferguson] so maybe your wife will enjoy it.

He finally offers up some advice to his opposite number, adding: ‘Maybe take a taste, I think you will like it. Well done for tonight.’

Ten Hag will take his team away to the winner of Nottingham Forest’s replay against Bristol City in the next round of the FA Cup.
