Rangers‘ Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee at Dens Park has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The announcement came less than two hours before kick-off, with referee Don Robertson meeting with managers Philippe Clement and Tony Docherty at approximately 10.20am to deem the pitch unplayable.

It is the fourth time that Dundee have had a game postponed this season due to a waterlogged pitch.

Doubts had been raised over whether the game would go ahead following heavy rainfall in north eastern parts of Scotland overnight, with officials conducting several pitch inspections ahead of the match.

Rangers, who had the chance to leapfrog Celtic and go top of the Scottish Premiership, announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing: ‘GAME OFF: Today’s match against Dundee has been postponed.

‘The club will make further comment in due course.’

Dundee added: ‘Recent rainfall has meant the pitch has become waterlogged and the match has been called off.’

Mail Sport’s columnist Chris Sutton hit out at the timing of the decision on social media, calling the postponement an ‘absolute shambles’.

‘A total embarrassment for the Scottish top flight having the Dundee Rangers game called off an hour and a half before kick off.

‘Absolute shambles how it’s come to this. Don Robertson the ref rocks up at 1020 for a pitch inspection… surely a decision earlier would be wiser…’

Dundee managing director John Nelms revealed that the club have had grounds staff working since 5am as they endeavoured to ensure the game went ahead as planned.

‘The ball is rolling, we’ve had guys out here since 5am and mother nature’s done what it’s done but we’ve done everything we could to get this pitch into place,’ he said.

‘We’ve two small spots that the ball is not bouncing as we speak, the rest of the pitch is fine and they said they don’t believe we’ll be able to get it playable before 12 o’clock. So, that’s where we’re at.’
