Manchester United‘s extensive injury list features several first-team stars, with Erik ten Hag set to be without several key defenders for the Red Devils’ FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City on Sunday.
First-choice centre-back pair Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are both out, while Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are also unable to feature. As a result, academy star Willy Kambwala will be forced to partner Harry Maguire yet again.
The picture in forward areas is far more positive, but Anthony Martial remains sidelined.
Below, FootballTransfers runs through the latest Man Utd injury update.
Man Utd injuries
Antony
Antony was not included in the matchday squad to face Bournemouth, but he will return to face Coventry, according to Ten Hag.
In his pre-match press conference, the Man Utd boss revealed: “I expect him to be back. Antony did train all week.”
Possible Return Date: 21 April
Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire played the full 90 minutes against Bournemouth, but Ten Hag has confirmed the Englishman was nursing an issue during the match.
The Dutchman has admitted: “Okay against Bournemouth, he struggled. He had a small injury and he didn’t train this week so far but now he is back on the pitch. We expect him today to be back in team training and he will be available I hope, for Sunday.”
Possible Return Date: 21 April
Scott McTominay
Scott McTominay has missed the past two matches, but during his pre-match press conference Ten Hag admitted: “I expect him to be back.”
However, the Scotland international is unlikely to start.
Possible Return Date: 21 April
Jonny Evans
Veteran defender Jonny Evans suffered a minor knock prior to the most recent international break and he lasted just 21 minutes against Chelsea in April before being forced off again.
The 36-year-old’s return date is currently unknown, but he isn’t expected to miss too many weeks of action.
Possible Return Date: April
Lisandro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez has endured an injury-hit season and is now sidelined through a calf problem.
He had recovered from a ligament knee injury suffered against West Ham in February, but the Argentine is now out after picking up a calf strain in training.
The ex-Ajax defender is expected to return before the end of the season.
Possible Return Date: May
Victor Lindelof
Victor Lindelof is also expected to miss one month of action due to a muscle injury – although the Sweden international is out with a hamstring problem, rather than a calf one.
He may not play again this season.
Possible Return Date: May
Raphael Varane
Raphael Varane suffered a muscle injury during Man Utd’s 4-3 loss to Chelsea and he was withdrawn after 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge.
He missed the draw against Liverpool and is expected to miss at least a month of action. His season could be over if any setbacks in his recovery occur.
Possible Return Date: May
Luke Shaw
After Luke Shaw was substituted at half-time against Aston Villa in February, Ten Hag was quick to ensure that his withdrawal was simply a “precaution” for a player with a “history of too many injuries.”
The England international then started the following match versus Luton before being withdrawn in the first half due to a thigh issue, which has kept him sidelined ever since.
Ten Hag recently admitted that Shaw is expected to return before the end of the season, but his chances of being selected in England’s Euro 2024 squad are limited as things stand.
Possible Return Date: May
Anthony Martial
Martial is set to leave Man Utd when his contract expires this summer, and the Frenchman may well have played his last game for the club if his current injury suffers any setbacks.
The Frenchman has undergone surgery on a groin injury and had been expected to return in April.
However, he is yet to return to training, meaning his actual return date is unknown and he may well have played his last game for the Red Devils.
Possible Return Date: Unknown
Tyrell Malacia
There has been very little new information regarding Tyrell Malacia’s return over the past few weeks.
The Dutchman was expected to return in January, but he remains absent and may not play again until May. Ten Hag has not stated when Malacia will return, however, the Dutchman recently admitted the ex-Feyenoord defender “had setbacks during his rehab process.”
He is yet to play this season and will likely not be rushed back.
Possible Return Date: Unknown
