Sheffield United were give a relegation lifeline by the Premier League in a now deleted post on social media.
The Blades relegation to the Championship was confirmed on Saturday following their 5-1 defeat by Newcastle.
Needing a victory at Newcastle to delay their drop to the second division, Sheffield United took the lead just five minutes into the game through Anel Ahmedhodzic, before Alexander Isak levelled halfway through the first half.
The Blades’ slim hopes of survival were extinguished in the second half as Bruno Guimaraes put Newcastle ahead, before Isak completed his brace by converting a penalty seven minutes later.
The visitors conceded again shortly afterward as Ben Osborn’s deflected one into his own net, before Callum Wilson added a fifth only minutes later.
Sheffield United have been relegated from the Premier League after a 5-1 loss at Newcastle
The Blades were given hope by the Premier League in a now deleted social media post
To make matters worse, Chris Wilders’ men were given hope again in a post by the Premier League which indicated their demotion is dependant on Everton and Nottingham Forest’s points-deduction appeal before it was deleted.
The post, which was made on X, said: ‘Following their defeat to Newcastle, Sheffield Utd are relegated pending Everton and Nottingham Forest’s points-deduction appeals.’
Forest were penalised four points for failing to stay in line with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability regulations, which has left them a single point above the bottom three.
Everton meanwhile had their their 10-point deduction reuced to six, only to be deducted another two for a further breach.
Chris Wilder’s men will play in the Championship next season after a poor campaign
Both Everton and Nottingham Forest have lodged appeals against their points deduction
Both clubs have lodged appeals and expect to hear an outcome in the coming weeks.
Although Sheffield United’s destiny looks to be set they could avoid the drop if both Everton and Forest are deducted further points.
However, a Premier League stay remains unlikely for them given the fact they have won just three games all season.
The Blades are 20 point adrift of Everton, while Forest are 10 points ahead of bottom spot.
