Sport Bild Report: Dortmund vetoed Reyna loan to Bochum near the end of transfer window

Germany’s main sporting tabloid claims that USMNT international Giovanni Reyna of Borussia Dortmund very nearly received a loan out to VfL Bochum near the end of the transfer window.

Without much prospects at Dortmund following his flop loan out to Nottingham Forest, 21-year-old American attacker Giovanni Reyna nearly received a loan out to Ruhrpott rivals VfL Bochum on deadline day. This is reported by Germany’s main sporting tabloid, Sport Bild. The paper claimed that Reyna and his team of advisors were in favor of the move, but that the BVB administrative team preferred a direct sale.

Dortmund’s “kleines Revierderby” opponents could hardly have been expected to afford Reyna, who for all of his recent struggle does maintain an estimated market worth of €18 million in the latest transfermarkt update. Given the fact that new BVB trainer Nuri Sahin presently has fewer attacking options than he might like could potentially see Reyna return to the fold.

Reyna has made all three of Sahin’s match-day squads in Dortmund’s three competitive fixtures thus far this year. He made one brief appearance as a substitute in the opening day win over Frankfurt. In Sahin’s current system, Julian Brandt and Marcel Sabitzer are the preferred 3-4-3 buttressing attackers. Several other options still leave Reyna far down on the depth chart.

“He has to accept his role and look to step up,” BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl recently said of Reyna, “It was clear when we held talks in the summer that Gio accepted this role. That there will be enough games where we need him. We know that he has incredible skills. He’s also worked on his stability and professional posture.”
