Ineos have revealed why Ruben Amorim is the man for the Manchester United job.

The club’s co-owners made the decision to sack Erik ten Hag earlier this week. United lie 14th in the Premier League table while in the Europa League, they are still winless.

The club made the choice to relieve Ten Hag of his duties as a result. In his place, Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has come in to try and get the Old Trafford club back on track.

United’s official confirmed the news on Friday, saying that the deal was “done.” This was then followed by a number of reporters who said that the side view the Portuguese man as different to the other managers that they have hired.

Ben Jacobs, of GiveMeSport, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “First time Manchester United has appointed a ‘head coach’ rather than a ‘manager’.

“Amorim does not have a recruitment veto. He is a notably different profile from former #MUFC bosses, but his arrival also reflects the evolution of Manchester United’s football structure.

Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail wrote similarly shortly before: “Significant that Amorim has been given the title of head coach and not manager. Utd sources say he is a different profile from previous managers and will fit in well with the club’s football structure.'”

Amorim will have less power

It appears that the incoming head coach will not be granted the same power as his predecessor in choosing new players. Over the summer, Ineos brought in new executives in Dan Ashworth, as the sporting director, and Omar Berrada as the new CEO.

Jason Wilcox also came in as the technical director to make up the backroom staff in full who would oversee transfers. With Ten Hag, the club granted the Dutchman some say, but questions were asked, even last summer, over how much influence he had.

The former Ajax man was in office as United bought Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, for instance. Both players had worked under Ten Hag before, along with Andre Onana, Antony, and Lisandro Martínez.

Meanwhile, Wout Weghorst, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat, and Tyrell Malacia had all played in the Dutchman’s home nation previously.
