Amorim tipped to axe ‘unmanageable’ Rashford at Man Utd

Marcus Rashford is expected to struggle in Ruben Amorim’s system at Manchester United and could face the axe under the Portuguese tactician.

The 27-year-old has been a major disappointment since the start of last season and his seismic dip in form after a 30-goal 2022/23 campaign no doubt contributed to Erik ten Hag losing his Man Utd job last month.

Rashford has recorded just two goals and two assists across the Premier League and Europa League this term. Even under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, the England international did not manage to play a full 90 minutes – nor did he contribute to a goal – despite the fact that the rest of the team looked massively improved.

Now, with Ruben Amorim at the helm, Rashford legitimately has to fear for his place in the side and, many will argue, rightfully so. The Portuguese is known for taking no prisoners and will likely rely heavily on in-form Amad Diallo as one of his wide options, leaving Alejandro Garnacho and Rashford to battle it out for the other spot.

Amorim tipped to axe Rashford

There is a well-founded suspicion that Rashford won’t last long under the 39-year-old. Indeed, chief talkSPORT correspondent Alex Crook fully expects the winger to be dropped by the no-nonsense Amorim.

“I’m not convinced where he fits in under Ruben Amorim,” he said, “because we know he wants to play this 3-4-3 formation, that’s more of a sort of two in behind a central striker, rather than with out-and-out wingers, as Rashford clearly prefers to play.

“So it wouldn’t surprise me if, in the fullness of time, when Ruben Amorim gets his feet under the desk, he realises that Rashford doesn’t really have the tools to do the job that he wants to, and then Manchester United have got a very highly paid player who doesn’t really fit.

Man Utd, Crook claims, have a problem with players “who don’t want to run. And you’re looking at people like Rashford and Garnacho, who got a rollicking, didn’t he, from Casemiro for not tracking back against Chelsea.

“And you look at the volume of managers that have been there and tried to raise standards in that dressing room since [Sir Alex] Ferguson went.

“David Moyes, we know he’s a hard taskmaster, same for Louis van Gaal. Jose Mourinho doesn’t take any prisoners. I think Erik ten Hag, with his treatment of [Cristiano] Ronaldo, tried to own that dressing room, but ultimately they’re unmanageable, some of these players.”
