Jose Mourinho has poured cold water on rumours linking Fenerbahce with a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting the Al-Nassr star has no reason to move to Turkey.

Recent reports from Turkey claimed that Mourinho had made a personal phone call trying to recruit Ronaldo, with the 39-year-old’s contract set to expire next summer, however the Portuguese coach had recently described those reports as ‘ridiculous’.

There has been speculation that Ronaldo could look to leave Al-Nassr, having failed to win the Saudi Pro League during his two years at the club, and a move to Fenerbahce would have offered the Portuguese legend another chance to play in Europe again.

However, with Edin Dzeko, Youssef En-Nesyri and Cenk Tosun having scored 19 goals between them this season, Mourinho has insisted that he is happy with his current options and that Ronaldo would only come to Turkey ‘for the beauty of Istanbul’.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will not come. The first reason is that I have three good forwards and I don’t want another one,” Mourinho said.

“Cristiano will always be Cristiano, but I don’t want him because I’m happy with my forwards. He has the money he earns in Saudi Arabia and a goal of 1,000 goals. What could motivate him to come to Turkey, other than the beauty of Istanbul?”

Mourinho not pushing for January transfers

Mourinho and Ronaldo still enjoy a strong relationship, having worked together at Real Madrid when the forward had the most prolific spell of his career.

Fenerbahce will have hoped a move for Ronaldo would help them close the gap on leaders Galatasaray, who have a six-point lead over Mourinho’s men.

However, Mourinho insisted he wasn’t pushing for any arrivals in January due to the adjustment period some players may face when moving mid-season.

“I don’t really like the January transfer window because the player who comes needs a certain amount of time,” Mourinho said.

“I never say no to a transfer, but I don’t knock on [directors] Ali Bey’s or Acun Bey’s door and say I want a transfer.”
