Everton fans have been put through the wringer by their club so often in recent years yet drama has never been quite so exhilarating as under David Moyes this second time around.

That historic last-gasp leveller against Liverpool in their final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park, another thrilling draw to Manchester United and now, on a blistery night in west London, Jake O’Brien’s late equaliser secured another against Brentford to extend Everton’s unbeaten run to seven Premier League games.

For much of the second half, it looked like this great run under Moyes would come to an end at the Gtech Community Stadium when Yoane Wissa made Everton pay for their wastefulness in first-half stoppage time by heading in his 13th league goal of the season.

And yet the Toffees could so easily have won it had striker Beto, looking to become only the fourth player to score in five straight Premier League games for the club, not fluffed three golden chances when through one-on-one but failed to get the better of Brentford keeper Mark Flekken on each occasion.

‘He’s been deadly in those situations and the keeper made some great saves,’ said Everton boss David Moyes. ‘I know he doesn’t score tonight but he’s making chances. He’s got through three times, I hope he keeps doing that for us.’

Beto had already shinned a volley over the bar when he pounced on Nathan Pinnock’s slip only to toe-poke the ball into the onrushing Flekken.

Moyes was without usual midfield talisman Abdoulaye Doucoure, who had swapped the engine room for the delivery room with his wife giving birth, but it was his replacement Carlos Alcaraz who played Beto in again two minutes later but Flekken deflected his shot wide.

Wissa missed an early chance when he headed straight at Jordan Pickford but made no mistake when his second opportunity came, reacting quickest to nod home after Bryan Mbeumo headed a bouncing long throw against the crossbar.

He thought he’d put the game to bed just after the hour when he had the ball in the net but saw his goal ruled out for offside.

Moyes’ side refused to lie down and 13 minutes from time Vitalii Mykolenko curled a cross to the far post and the unmarked O’Brien nodded in the equaliser.

Beto could have won it late on when he was sent through for a third time but Flekken came to the rescue once again to save his curling effort.

‘Flekken was outstanding,’ said Brentford boss Thomas Frank. ‘He was not too busy but made three crucial saves. He’s one of the best in the league in one-on-ones. He gave us the opportunity to go 1-0 up and then made sure we got a point. It was probably a fair result.’
