Manchester United have ‘called’ Sporting CP to be informed on the situation of Viktor Gyokeres, but they face a ‘battle’ to sign him, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Sporting CP sharpshooter has returned to his peak form after several weeks of concerns over his fitness. In his past four games, Gyokeres has netted three goals and provided two assists.

All told, the Swede has scored 37 times and set up his teammates on nine occasions in 39 appearances across all competitions, illustrating that he remains one of Europe’s most in-form strikers and that last season wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

Unsurprisingly, Gyokeres continues to be linked with some of the biggest clubs in world football, chief among them Man Utd. The Red Devils face financial concerns ahead of the summer, but they are planning to sign a top-class striker in the next window.

Whether Gyokeres will ultimately be that man remains to be seen, but the Red Devils and their head coach Ruben Amorim will certainly give it a good go.

Man Utd enquire about Gyokeres

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man Utd have ‘called’ Sporting CP to sound out a summer transfer. The Lisbon giants are resigned to losing Gyokeres and will allow him to leave for around €70 million.

Man Utd’s ability to sign him will ultimately hinge on sales in the summer and whether they qualify for the Champions League. However, the Red Devils are certainly pessimistic – or realistic – on the latter and are budgeting for a prolonged absence from Europe’s premier competition.

Romano therefore acknowledges that it will be anything but easy for the Old Trafford club to land the 26-year-old. Moreover, they are also very keen on signing Sporting wonderkid Geovany Quenda. He will likely cost around €40m, so they may only be able to sign one of the two.

Then, of course, there is the problem that they are far from the only club interested in Gyokeres. Romano states that they will have to be ‘ready for the battle’ for the Swede’s signature.
