Luis Suarez admitted he went home and cried after being convinced to stay at Liverpool in 2013. The Uruguayan striker was at the centre of an infamous £40m-plus-£1 bid from Arsenal, a move they believed would activate his release clause.

Liverpool, however, were adamant about not selling their talisman, with the club’s owner John W. Henry famously mocking the bid in a tweet: “What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?”.

Suarez was keen on leaving, drawn by the lure of Champions League football which Arsenal offered. But in an unexpected twist, he revealed in a chat with streamer Davoo Xeneize that Liverpool’s legendary captain Steven Gerrard successfuly intervened.

Recounting his interaction with Gerrard, Suarez shared, “He said to me: ‘Listen to me, I was also going to go to Real Madrid and other places, but the best decision is for you to stay this year, because going to Arsenal will not help you at all in your career.

“If you stay, next year you will decide whether to go to Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barcelona‘.”

Moved by Gerrard’s words, Suarez admitted, “That day I went home crying and told my wife that I would stay.”, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Luis Suarez had a stellar final campaign with Liverpool, narrowly missing out on the Premier League title but managing to net 31 goals and lay on 12 assists in just 33 league matches. Gerrard’s prediction was spot on as well, with Suarez making that big-money move to Barcelona for £65m in the summer of 2014.

However, the prolific striker’s desire to leave Liverpool wasn’t only evident during his flirtations with Arsenal in 2013. The now 38-year-old disclosed that he almost left Anfield back in the summer of 2012 as well.

It was Juventus who nearly lured Suarez away, but the Uruguayan was swayed by newly-appointed Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to stay. “In 2012 I wanted to go to Juventus. But Brendan Rodgers convinced me to stay, with his ideas about football.”
