Bastoni: ‘Inter can cause huge problems for anyone’ in Champions League after 2-1 victory

Alessandro Bastoni is ‘so proud’ of Inter after ending Bayern Munich’s unbeaten home record. ‘Other teams might have more individual talent, but we can cause huge problems for anyone.’

The German giants were unbeaten on home turf in the Champions League for four years, so it was certainly not to be taken for granted that they would capitulate in this quarter-final first leg.

Lautaro Martinez had opened the scoring with a curler off the outside of the right boot, then Thomas Muller seemed to keep things level going into San Siro, but Davide Frattesi got on the end of the Carlos Augusto ball across from the left to seal a 2-1 victory.

“It means a lot, because we were coming off a terrible disappointment against Parma, and that hurt us, so we wanted to prove ourselves,” Bastoni told Sky Sport Italia.

The Nerazzurri were held to a 2-2 draw by Parma in Serie A at the weekend, despite taking a 2-0 lead at the Stadio Tardini.

“I am so proud of everyone, as Lautaro and Thuram were right back defending with us when they needed to, as were the midfielders.”

Inter have now conceded only three goals in the entire Champions League this season, a big difference compared to their record in Serie A.

“This is a great signal, especially for ourselves. We know that we can only do great things if we play like this,” noted Bastoni.

“Maybe there are teams out there who have more individual talent at their disposal, but when we work together in this way, we can cause huge problems for anyone.”

Can Inter now hope to go all the way in the Champions League, doing even better than reaching the Final in 2023?

“Bayern Munich are a great team, so we’ll have to suffer for the second leg too next week. However, if we didn’t think we could go all the way, we wouldn’t have even come to Munich,” smiled Bastoni.

The return fixture is at San Siro on Wednesday April 16.
