Frattesi on Inter goal for 2-1 victory in Munich: ‘It was written, it had to happen’

Davide Frattesi reveals how he knew ‘it was written’ that he would score Inter’s winner in the Champions League against Bayern Munich just days after losing his beloved grandmother.

Before the match, Frattesi sat down with Amazon Prime Video Italia to look back at the first leg, where Lautaro Martinez and Thomas Muller were on target, until the stoppage-time Frattesi winner.

“If I think back to the goal I scored in Munich, it gets me tearful,” Frattesi told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“My grandmother had died just before the match with Parma, but I stayed with the squad because Nicolò Barella and it was only right to help what is effectively my second family.

“When I say they were by my side during those moments, it’s true. I also received a lot of messages on social media, even the smallest gesture can be comforting.”

Frattesi thought of grandmother in Munich

Considering he’d just had that painful loss, how long after the goal did it take for his mind to drift to his grandmother?

“Before the ball even reached me. I was there and Carlos Augusto was putting in the cross, I felt it was written. I knew it had to happen.”

There had been suggestions that Frattesi was not at his best this season over the transfer speculation or injuries, but he was also hiding the pain of seeing his beloved grandmother’s health deteriorate.

“I was struggling for four months. I was very, very close to my grandmother. I thought nothing could affect me like that, but when it happened, I tried to tell myself it wasn’t going to happen, and that was a lie.

“I am generally an extroverted person, but I was really down, people could tell something was wrong, even if I didn’t talk about it. I don’t think you should take your personal problems to work, but maybe that was a mistake, because talking about it can help.

“Now the worst part is over, it can only be better.”

Knowing how much Frattesi had struggled with this situation is also why the celebrations were so wild from his Inter teammates after that late goal in Munich.

“Asllani and Arnautovic were very close to me during this time, they are like brothers now. I told Carlos if he hadn’t given me that cross, I would’ve killed him!

“I also want to thank the fans, because without them, it would’ve been even more difficult for me.”
