Matheus Cunha sent Man Utd reminder by team-mate with Wolves two points ahead

Manchester United are hoping to complete a transfer for Wolves star Matheus Cunha and the Brazilian is set for the very top according to team-mate Matt Doherty at Molineux

Matheus Cunha will soon be playing in the Champions League according to the Wolves star’s team-mate Matt Doherty. The Brazilian striker is drawing plenty of transfer interest after an impressive season at Molineux with Manchester United planning to launch a bid.

But the Red Devils will have a difficult task of securing a place in the Champions League. Ruben Amorim’s side sit 14th in the Premier League and two points behind Wolves.

They do have an opportunity thanks to their progress in Europe however. If they defeat Athletic Bilbao and move on to win the final of the Europa League they can earn a place in the continent’s biggest competition.

United have made Cunha a primary target and will be able to activate a £62.5million release clause. The 25-year-old looks set to leave the Midlands despite extending his contract earlier this year.

And Doherty has no doubt that Cunha will reach the top. The defender reckons his attacking team-mate has been able to start to realise his potential after departing Atletico Madrid.

Doherty said: “Sometimes it takes you to move away from a place to find yourself, to realise what you need to do, maybe to get back to a place. Because he should be playing week in, week out for Atletico.

“That’s not the case but I’m pretty sure he’s going to be playing at the highest level imaginable – Champions League, stuff like that – pretty soon. Huge, huge potential.”

United are keen to replenish their forward line in the upcoming transfer window. Victor Osimhen and Liam Delap have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, while Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres remains connected to former boss Amorim.

The Portuguese coach is adamant he only wants to see players arrive who want to play for the club, rather than in a competition they have qualified for. Asked about Gyokeres this week, Amorim said: “I didn’t talk to him.

“But if a player only wants to come to Manchester United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”

Amorim does not believe success in Europe this term redeems United’s season. “We know nothing is going to save our season,” said the 40-year-old. “But this can be huge.

“Winning a trophy to get into the Champions League to play European games next season could change a lot of things in our club in the summer. But it’s not the most important thing.”
