Chelsea fans have blasted Nicholas Jackson after he was shown a red in their crucial showdown with Newcastle.

The Blues striker was sent off in the 35th minute of the clash at St James’ Park following an elbow on Sven Botman.

Jackson was initially booked for the challenge on the defender, but saw the card upgraded after referee John Brooks was sent to the VAR screen.

The incident came as Chelsea were behind following Sandro Tonali‘s opener after just two minutes.

And Chelsea fans didn’t hold back in their criticism of Jackson given the importance of the match in the race for a top five spot.

One said: ‘Horrendous elbow’, while a second wrote, ‘Pathetic from him, What in the world is he doing’.

A third posted on X: ‘If Jackson ever plays for Chelsea again, we’ve failed as a club. What he’s cost the club in the long term, should never be seen again’.

Meanwhile, Joe Cole believes the right decision was made to give Jackson his marching orders.

‘No he can’t (have any complaints). He has a look, forearm smash in his face. It’s a silly thing to do. He gave the referee no choice,’ the former Chelsea winger told TNT Sports.

Peter Crouch added: ‘The two looks give the game away. It’s a definite red card.’

Jackson’s red card means he will miss Chelsea’s remaining two games against Manchester United next Friday and Nottingham Forest in a fortnight.
