Dortmund in talks to deploy former youngster for Club World Cup

Despite talks about a Borussia Dortmund return for the Club World Cup, Mats Hummels decided to retire after the end of his time at Roma. Meanwhile, the Black and Yellows are now thinking about another former center-back.

Soumaïla Coulibaly was once a highly-rated defender at Borussia Dortmund, but he never managed to fulfill expectations for many reasons. His time at Stade Brestois couldn’t be any different as well.

Coulibaly played every minute when Brest stunned Europe with 10 points from their first four Champions League games, but he only made 7 Ligue 1 appearances for the Breton club. He was sidelined for nearly five months throughout the season due to pelvic injury and adductor pain.

Although he hasn’t played since February, Dortmund are hoping to register him for the Club World Cup. The club and the defender held talks about the subject as Dortmund aren’t interested in keeping the player beyond this summer’s tournament. Nico Schlotterbeck is ruled out of the FIFA tournament due to a meniscus tear.
