Reports in Italy claim that Italy and Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi is on Manchester United’s shortlist to replace former Inter stopper Andre Onana in the event that he leaves to join AS Monaco this summer.
According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, Ligue 1 outfit Monaco have made an enquiry over Onana’s availability this summer.
Friday’s report also claims that Carnesecchi is United’s first-choice candidate to come in and replace Onana if he does decide to leave Old Trafford this summer.
United keen on Italy’s Carnesecchi if Onana leaves

Di Marzio claims that representatives from United have already held initial discussions with Carnsecchi’s agent, but not with any directors or executives from Atalanta.
Carnesecchi, 24, has made a strong impression during his first few seasons in Serie A, initially on loan with Cremonese, and then back with La Dea for 2023-24. He became the club’s outright no.1 in the second half of that season, and went on to make 34 top-flight appearances in 2024-25.
Carnesecchi was also included on the shortlist for the Serie A goalkeeper of the year award in 2023-24, finishing runner up to Michele Di Gregorio and alongside Wojciech Szczesny.
Though he remains uncapped, largely due to the presence of captain Gianluigi Donnarumma, Carnesecchi has also been a regular in the Italy national team squads over the last 12 months. He was also capped 21 times at U21 level.

Given that Carnsecchi still has plenty of room to grow as a 24-year-old keeper, and given the strong impression he has made in Italy thus far, Atalanta are unlikely to let him go unless a particularly large offer comes in, according to Di Marzio’s report.
United have history with Atalanta, however, given their purchase of Amad Diallo for a fee of €21m plus up to €20m in add-ons, and that of Rasmus Hojlund for a fee of €75m plus up to €10m in bonuses.
