Bayern plan to keep Paul Wanner – for now

Bayern München CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sporting director Max Eberl have confirmed that Paul Wanner is currently set to remain at the club for the 2025/26 season, despute significant loan interest in the 19-year-old.

Wanner spent last term on loan at Heidenheim to gain regular first-team minutes, and questions had been raised over whether the Germany U21 international would again be sent out for further experience.

Speaking at the opening of a special exhibition marking the Allianz Arena’s 20th anniversary, Dreesen explained: “From our regular meetings [Eberl, Freund and myself], including one this morning, Paul is on the list for the new season,” the CEO said.

Eberl added that Jamal Musiala’s injury has altered Bayern’s plans in the attacking midfield department: “Something will still happen. Because of Jamal’s injury, a completely new situation has arisen,” Eberl noted.

“There are many interested parties, which is great as it shows Paul’s development is going in the right direction. But he should now play a role at Bayern and take his chance.”

“As things stand, I see no reason why he shouldn’t be with us after 1 September. He has a place here and can help us.”

According to SKY, Bayern’s decision is not yet set in stone, and a late loan exit before the transfer deadline cannot be ruled out. Several clubs are reportedly keen, including Hamburg, Werder Bremen, PSV Eindhoven and Borussia Mönchengladbach. 

BILD even reported that Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus met Eberl at the “Uberfahrt” luxury hotel on Lake Tegernsee to discuss a potential deal over coffee. 

Virkus commented on the speculation: “I don’t comment on names, but it’s true we want to strengthen our creative department. We have a few concrete options in mind,” he said. But, for now, any move for Wanner appears to be off the table.
