Die Nullfünfer were without their talented striker this afternoon in the German cup.

Nelson Weiper could apparently still leave Mainz 05 before the transfer window closes on September 1st.

The center forward was missing from the Bundesliga club’s squad for their DfB-Pokal match against Dynamo Dresden this afternoon.

According to Mainz coach Bo Henriksen, this is due to “contractual decisions” which was later clarified by sporting director Christian Heidel.

“We are currently in discussions with Nelson. And that is not conducive to him being able to deliver a good performance today,” Heidel said.

Heidel explicitly did not want to rule out a transfer for the homegrown player whose contract in Mainz expires in 2026.

Without an extension in sight, this is Mainz’s last chance to collect a fee for the striker, with a €14million price mark recently discussed.

In the last few weeks since the transfer window opened, there have been repeated rumors of interest from England in Weiper .
