Chelsea and Villarreal have reached an agreement for the transfer of Renato Veiga, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Portugal international is set to depart Stamford Bridge after just 12 months. Signed in a bargain deal from Basel last summer, Veiga was seen as a low-risk transfer.

Things haven’t quite worked out for the 22-year-old, even though he showed himself to be a reliable player for the Blues. However, Veiga wants to be a regular starter at centre-back rather than a back-up left-back, and this is why he joined Juventus on loan in January.

He is now expected to leave permanently, and LaLiga side Villarreal have been in talks with him and Chelsea over the past week. According to Fabrizio Romano, Veiga already has an agreement on personal terms with the Champions League participants.

The transfer insider adds that the two clubs have now also managed to find common ground on a fee after Chelsea rejected a €24 million offer, which included further add-ons.

Villarreal close in on Veiga deal

Romano states that Villarreal have now agreed an initial €29.5m package with bonuses and a ‘heavy’ sell-on clause, matching Chelsea’s asking price of at least €30m.

Veiga is set to become Villarreal’s record signing, overtaking Arnaut Danjuma, who joined the club for €23.5m in 2021. This deal will also be crucial for Chelsea as it will make vital funds available.

Chelsea are still trying to add Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho to their side, but they need to complete outgoings before being able to finalise these two arrivals.

Talks are currently taking place with RB Leipzig and Bayern for Christopher Nkunku, while Aston Villa have expressed an interest in Nicolas Jackson. There are plenty more players who are expected to leave Chelsea before Deadline Day.
