Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim finds himself under real pressure of being sacked as the Red Devils have slumped to an embarrassing 2-0 deficit against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

In a match United were expected to cruise through, goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren saw the side fourth in League Two race into an unexpected advantage.

Amorim’s side boasted summer signings Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha leading the line, a pair who cost €150 million combined.

Andre Onana also made his comeback to the starting XI but another blunder from the keeper has put his position in further doubt.

Amorim failed to turn around the Red Devils’ fortunes last season and has made a poor start to the current campaign, picking up just one point from the opening two matches.

All this has led to speculation that the former Sporting CP boss could be sacked, but how much would it cost United to release the 40-year-old?

Amorim sacking to cost millions

Amorim would likely be due the remaining value of his contract if Man Utd were to sack him.

He has around two years left to run on his deal, which expires in 2027, and is paid an estimated €7 million (£6m) per season. That means it would likely cost the Old Trafford side around €14m to sack him.

But United would also have to take into account that Amorim’s backroom staff would also likely need to go – adding another significant layer of expense to this still theoretical operation.

While this is more difficult to estimate, The Sun reported back in February that for United to clear the decks would cost a total €24m. That figure will naturally have reduced by now, but it will still be an eye-watering amount for a club in turmoil.

United have already clocked up an astronomical bill of €72.2m purely in managerial sackings since Sir Alex Ferguson retired little over a decade ago, and it would be another humiliation for owners INEOS if Amorim was to add to that just weeks after arriving at the club.
