According to Bild, Leverkusen had been tracking Hjulmand for some time and had already considered him, alongside Cesc Fàbregas (Como), as one of the top two candidates to succeed Xabi Alonso earlier this year.
However, the Danish coach reportedly declined at the time, as he wanted to continue working on the establishment of a new campus at the Danish Football Association.
As Fàbregas was also unavailable, ten Hag stepped in – but after his departure, Leverkusen managed to persuade Hjulmand on their second try.
The report states that the former Denmark national team coach will earn a base salary of around €2.5 million per year, which could rise to €3 million with bonuses.
