Former Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial is eager to close out a nightmare spell in his career and has been presented with the opportunity to move to Mexico – but he needs to make a quick decision.

Martial, 29, was once one of the hottest young properties in world football, scoring 11 Premier League goals in his first season at Old Trafford and later managing an impressive 17 in the 2019/20 campaign.

In recent years, his career has headed south rapidly. Injuries and a lack of form saw him struggle latterly at Man Utd, and last summer he signed for Greek Super League side AEK Athens.

Although he netted seven times in 16 league appearances, the club was left disappointed with his overall contribution in what was a disastrous season for the team. His wages of €2.5 million per year, however, have seen the Greek outfit try to force him out “at all costs”, FootMercato reports.

Offers were expected from Turkey this summer, but no bids came. Despite this, he has been largely frozen out of AEK’s squad in the early part of the campaign, making just a solitary appearance.

Martial’s transfer dilemma

Martial has been offered to six Liga MX clubs, the French source reports, with Pumas UNAM entering talks for the player.

The forward faces a ‘terrible choice’, though. He may need to take a substantial salary cut in order to make the move to Mexico. Pumas are not prepared to pay the type of money that Martial is on at AEK, but it appears the player is not prepared to take a sizeable cut.

With the Mexican transfer window closing on 13 September, Martial is therefore being forced into a rapid decision: stay at AEK where he appears to be an outsider or move to Pumas, where he will be forced to take a pay cut.
