Liverpool will reportedly only be forced to pay the full €134 million transfer fee for Florian Wirtz on one condition.
The Germany international, 22, moved to Anfield for a club-record fee in July, which has now been broken by Alexander Isak, following a stellar spell at Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz established himself as one of the world’s best players during his time at the BayArena, and he registered 16 goals and 15 assists during his final campaign at the club.
The 22-year-old was wanted by almost every elite club in European football, with Real Madrid strong admirers of the attacking midfielder and eager to bring him to the Spanish capital along with Xabi Alonso.
Bayern Munich and Manchester City were also competitors for his signature, however Liverpool won the race for his signature after presenting their long-term project to the player.
Although Wirtz is yet to register a goal contribution in three Premier League appearances for Liverpool, the Reds still believe they have acquired a world-class player and understand that he will need time to adapt to English football.
Furthermore, The Times have revealed that Liverpool are unlikely to pay the entirety of Wirtz’s €134m transfer fee.
Florian Wirtz to Liverpool
According to The Times, Liverpool agreed to pay a guaranteed fee of €115.6m (£100m) for Wirtz, in addition to €18.5m (£16m) in potential add-on clauses.
However, those add-ons will reportedly only be triggered if Liverpool win the Premier League or the Champions League on four occasions during Wirtz’s time at the club.
The Reds have assembled one of the best squads in world football, however they have only won the English top flight title and the Champions League a combined four times since the Premier League era began in 1992.
As a result, there is reason to believe they will never pay off Wirtz’s entire transfer fee.
Furthermore, the club also managed to negotiate that five equal payments will be made to Bayer Leverkusen to cover the initial fee for Wirtz, as opposed to an up-front payment.
