Transfer insider David Ornstein has shared his view on the ongoing debate surrounding the Manchester United future of Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese is facing a quick departure from the Red Devils after a horrid start to the season. Amorim has been in the job for less than a year, but his future is already hanging in the balance.

Man Utd have recorded just one win so far this term, losing twice in the Premier League and crashing out of the Carabao Cup against League Two side Grimsby.

Although Man Utd reached the Europa League final last season, Amorim’s time in charge of the Old Trafford club has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

Reports have claimed that Man Utd plan to sack Amorim during the October international break, but financial considerations could postpone the decision. Firing him before he completes his first year – he was appointed on 11 November 2024 – would entitle him to €13.8 million in compensation.

Ornstein on Amorim sack

Transfer insider David Ornstein has now provided his take on the situation, insisting that things ‘can’t continue’ like this but acknowledging that Man Utd will be reluctant to let go of another manager less than 12 months after sacking Erik ten Hag.

“Well, it hasn’t gone to plan is an understatement,” Ornstein said on the Back Pages podcast. “Not even a year since he was appointed, and things are looking bleak again. It’s a bit of a sense of Groundhog Day.

“When you speak to people around United, they’re very keen and quick to point out that the performance metrics are up. There’s a piece by Martin Samuel in The Times that sort of makes a bit of a mockery of that, because it’s these results, it’s putting the ball in the back of the net, and they’re not doing that nearly enough.

“I think it’s logical to understand that this can’t continue. I don’t know about a set number of games. I don’t think United are minded to be changing manager again already.”
