A spate of controversial appearances brought forward the media have cast Bayern’s Uli Hoeneß in a negative light in recent months.

From publicly spilling the beans on transfer negotiations to criticism of sporting director Max Eberl – Günter Netzer feels it’s all too much.

“He [Hoeneß] is simply still too closely connected to Bayern Munich,” said the 81-year-old former Germany international on SPORT1.

“[He] repeatedly causes controversy with things that don’t belong in the public eye, and makes it difficult for many others in this job.

“He’s a different type than me; he brings certain things to the public that I preferred to discuss internally.

“Problems that have surfaced were mostly taboo for me in public. But that’s just Uli Hoeneß at his best. It’s a habit,” Netzer added.

But the 1974 World Cup winner and Gladbach star didn’t forget to praise Hoeneß for his achievements with the Bavarian giants.

He feels Hoeneß had “significant influence” on the record champions and created “something incredible […] a life’s work that is unparalleled.”
