Manchester United will sack head coach Ruben Amorim before Christmas, pundit Jamie Carragher predicts.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult start to the season, which has piled the pressure on Amorim. The 40-year-old faced a potentially career-defining clash against Sunderland at the weekend, but he managed to survive.
Man Utd won 2-0, buying Amorim some more time. That said, any dismissal of the Portuguese would have been a reluctant one anyway, as the Old Trafford club are aware that sacking him before he completes a year in the job (11 November) will incur a huge compensation fee.
It will be key for Amorim to keep up the modicum of momentum that the victory over Sunderland generated after the international break, although that may be easier said than done.
Man Utd’s first clash after the break will be away at rivals Liverpool, who will be out for blood after losing three games on the bounce for the first time since Arne Slot took charge of the club.
Carragher: Amorim will be sacked before Christmas
According to former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, Man Utd’s victory over Sunderland only delayed the “inevitable.” The Sky Sports pundit believes that Amorim’s position is “untenable” and expects him to be sacked before Christmas.
“I don’t like saying a manager should be sacked – it’s disrespectful and it’s a man’s job – but I’m at that point where I do think Ruben Amorim’s job is untenable,” Carragher said on The Overlap.
“It’s inevitable that this is going to happen before Christmas. His stats are unbelievable for a Manchester United manager. 50 games as Manchester United manager, he’s only scored two more goals than he’s conceded.”
Man Utd legend Paul Scholes backed up Carragher’s sentiment by stating that Amorim has already been “given too much time.” The former midfielder is convinced that “it is only a matter of time” before the 40-year-old loses his job.
