Would YOU have known the answer to this World Cup question that cost gutted quiz show contestant a massive £108,000 payday?

A contestant on a German quiz show was left devastated after failing to answer a tricky World Cup question worth £108,000 correctly – despite getting help from a football fan in the audience.

Marc Offenbacher had been cruising his way towards a huge payday on the German version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

He was then asked a question even the most ardent football fan may have struggled to answer.

Host Gunther Jauch asked: ‘What is the most common final score in men’s World Cup finals? 1–0? 2–1? 3–1? Or 4–2?’

Offenbacher admitted he was not a football fan after being posed with the question, worth €125,000.

He then decided to use a lifeline not available on the UK version of the popular gameshow, where he was able to ask a specific member of the audience who thought they might know the answer.

The question read: ‘What is the most common final score in men’s World Cup finals? 1–0? 2–1? 3–1? Or 4–2?’

Sadly for Offenbacher, he went for the wrong option - and left the show with just £435

After a discussion with the audience member – where they both ruled out the correct answer – he went with 2-1.

‘Three finals ended 1-0 and 3-1…’ the host began.

‘Between those other two results — one of them occurred four times in a World Cup final, and the other only twice…

‘One happened four times, one happened twice… And the score that occurred four times in a final was 4–2.’

Offenbacher had guaranteed himself €64,000 and would have taken home that amount if he decided not to answer the difficult World Cup trivia.

Instead the gutted contestant left the show with just €500.

The last World Cup final to end 4-2 came in Russia in 2018, when France beat Croatia to lift the trophy.

It was also the scoreline when England overcame West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, thanks largely to Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick.
