Celtic are monitoring Brighton striker Evan Ferguson, who is on loan at Serie A giants Roma, with the Hoops targeting a possible January swoop for the Ireland international hitman.

Ferguson completed a one-year loan move to the Italian capital in the summer but has struggled for game time at Celtic’s future Europa League opponents.

The 21-year-old has failed to net in 10 appearances for the Giallorossi across all competitions this season and has been missing from action since the beginning of November because of an ankle sprain.

According to 67 Hail Hail, Celtic are ready to renew their interest in Ferguson, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €20 million, after missing out on him last summer.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has revealed that the Irishman’s loan at Roma is expected to be cancelled in January, opening the door to the possibility of a switch to the Glasgow giants.

Ferguson has not played competitively for Brighton this season, so could complete a second loan when the transfer window opens.

Celtic have struggled for goals this season and need additional firepower, which they expect the former Bohemians youth to bring. Once valued at more than €100m by Brighton, Ferguson needs an opportunity to kickstart his career and the Parkhead outfit could provide him with that in a move that would appear mutually beneficial.

Evan Ferguson to Celtic: Expert opinion from Irish football expert Ronan Murphy

“When Evan Ferguson broke onto the scene with Dublin club Bohemians, he was just 14 so teams in England stood up and took notice.

“The striker opted for Brighton despite interest from Liverpool and his decision seemed to be more than just sensible as he shone for the team’s reserves before being a key part of their first-team squad.

“In 2022/23, he scored 10 goals for the Seagulls but then disaster struck with injury ruling him out for six months. Since then, Ferguson has never found that form he had as a teenager despite loans to West Ham and Roma.

“It looked as if the Serie A side would be the perfect fit under new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, but all of Roma’s strikers have been underperforming this season and when Ferguson was put in the starting XI, he suffered another injury.

“If he could remain match fit for an extended period, his confidence and his goals should return, but this is a big if for a player who has struggled to gain full sharpness due to his repeated injuries.”
