Rangers head towards January with a squad to rebuild, but it appears the current priority is to ensure that new manager Danny Rohl secures the services of an existing star on a long-term basis.
The Gers have three players out of contract in 2026: James Tavernier, Liam Kelly and John Souttar.
Scotland centre-back Souttar has been made their priority to tie down to a new contract, according to a report from the Daily Record.
The 29-year-old has been in excellent form of late and has established himself as Rangers’ defensive leader. On top of this, he is now a regular for Steve Clarke’s Scotland side as they head to the 2026 World Cup in North America next summer.
Souttar’s efforts are set to be recognised by the Glasgow club.
The record claims that the former Dundee United youngster has been offered improved terms on a two-year contract extension. On offer is a “substantial wage increased”, according to the Glasgow-based source.
It adds that negotiations are still ongoing with Souttar’s agents.
What about Tavernier and Kelly?
The future of Tavernier and Kelly appears less clear. The English right-back largely remains a starter under Rohl, though his impact has dimmed in recent months.
Scotland keeper Kelly, meanwhile, is seen as an “important member of Danny Rohl’s playing staff”, according to the Record, which adds that his club-trained status makes him attractive for European football. Based on this, the former Livingston goalkeeper should also expect a new contract offer coming his way.
Rangers braced for busy January
Rangers are expected to dip into the transfer market again in January. Although the Ibrox club spent big in the summer, their arrivals have almost all flopped, leaving them fourth in the Premiership table and with just one point in the Europa League ahead of a clash against Ferencvaros in Hungary on Thursday.
They are likely to see several new faces arrive, but also numerous Ibrox misfits allowed to leave.
