EFL and National League football matches POSTPONED after snow and ice weather warning in the UK

Several clubs across non-league football have been affected by the current cold snap that is gripping the United Kingdom, with their matches being subsequently postponed.

Up and down the UK, plenty of areas are dealing with the adverse weather conditions which is producing snow and ice.

The Met Office has put plenty of amber and yellow warnings out as a result, with temperatures of minus one degrees Celsius being recorded.

A direct consequence of this has seen football matches being postponed.

The most high-profile match to be called off at present is Notts County’s clash with Gillingham in League Two.

That fixture is not being played until Sunday, but Notts County confirmed on Saturday morning that it won’t go ahead after a pitch inspection.

In a statement on their website, they said: ‘Sunday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Gillingham has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

‘With freezing temperatures last night and forecast again for tonight, frost sheets were applied to the pitch immediately after our New Year’s Day match against Accrington Stanley and an EFL-appointed official was booked to conduct a preliminary inspection this morning.

‘Despite our best efforts, the pitch has frozen and, with temperatures remaining very cold between now and kick-off, the match has been postponed.

‘All tickets will remain valid for the rearranged date. No refunds can be processed until this date is confirmed.’

Just after 9am on Saturday morning, National League outfit Brackley Town said their match with Rochdale was off too.

That away fixture was due to be played at Accrington Stanley’s Wham Stadium. Accrington Stanley’s groundstaff shared footage of the frozen pitch, even with frost covers having been laid on the pitch since Tuesday.

Aldershot Town’s with Solihull Moors also suffered the same fate following a pitch inspection at 8.30am. However, the club revealed that the game will go ahead a week later now on January 10 instead.

On Friday, National League leaders Boreham Wood saw their mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash with York City called off 24 hours in advance due to a frozen playing surface.

Scunthorpe United were also forced to postpone their fixture with Sutton United a day before kick-off, due to the weather.

Elsewhere, Chorley announced that their National League North clash at home to Leamington was off after their pitch failed a pre-match inspection by the referee.

Alfreton Town versus Hereford is another that won’t be played.

The National League South wasn’t spared either, with Hornchurch’s clash with Salisbury has also falling victim to the icy conditions.

It’s not just in England too, with the weather leading to the postponement of the Scottish League Two clash between Stirling Albion and Annan Athletic
