What next for Oliver Glasner? The five top European clubs who should be chasing outgoing Crystal Palace boss as he seeks ‘new challenge’

Oliver Glasner‘s bombshell announcement that he is leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the season is bound to have put clubs across Europe on red alert.

The FA Cup-winning manager sensationally revealed how he told chairman Steve Parish all the way back in October that he will be departing Selhurst Park at the end of the season.

And to compound the misery for Palace fans, their Austrian boss also told how captain Marc Guehi is closing in on a move to Man City in a transfer that will rock the Premier League as the title race hots up.

Glasner, who won a Europa League with Frankfurt before arriving in south London, has been an incredible addition to England’s top flight. By beating City at Wembley last May he brought Palace their first ever major trophy, before clinching the Community Shield in August against Liverpool three months later. 

But now that he’s back on the market – and with several big clubs potentially looking for new managers at the end of the season – where does Glasner go now? 

Daily Mail Sport assesses five possible landing spots for the 51-year-old.

1. Man United

The moment the Palace manager uttered the words that he was ‘ready for a new challenge’ on Friday afternoon, bookmakers wasted no time slashing the odds on Glasner becoming United’s next permanent manager. 

And it is easy to see why. 

Glasner has built up a reputation for consistently exceeding expectations and – crucially for United – has made a habit of winning trophies in recent years.

There are, inevitably, questions over Glasner’s preferred system. His use of a 3-4-2-1 at Palace will cause some United fans to squirm, recalling Ruben Amorim’s ultimately detrimental devotion to the same shape.

But fear not, United fans. Glasner wouldn’t be Amorim Mk II if he was given the Old Trafford hotseat – because he’s already been outspoken about how he is not wedded to one formation.

‘The philosophy is not the system,’ Glasner explained last November. ‘The philosophy are the habits and the patterns on the pitch. That’s the philosophy.

‘The system can change. Again, I’ve played every single system – every single one. So, really, from 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, 3-4-3, 3-5-2… I’ve played everything.’

Our verdict: A great option for United who would be silly not to consider it, but Glasner may hold his reservations about working under Jim Ratcliffe and Co.

2. Tottenham

Thomas Frank remains the Spurs manager at the time of writing, but patience in north London can only stretch so far if they continue languishing in the Premier League’s bottom half.

With exits already confirmed from the EFL Cup and FA Cup, no realistic title challenge on the horizon and a miracle required if they wish to do anything the Champions League, all the signs point towards another trophyless season. 

Yet beyond that, the biggest frustration for many Spurs supporters is the turgid nature of the football. 

Frank knows how to keep the goals out, but putting the ball in the back of the net is proving difficult. Meanwhile Glasner’s side, known for their quick counter-attacking, are never far from the scoresheet.

Perhaps a fusion of Glasner and Frank would make the best manager in the Premier League, but unfortunately, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is only big enough for one of them.

Could Spurs be tempted to pick up the phone to Glasner should they dismiss Frank? I don’t see why not.

3. Juventus

Luciano Spalletti was only brought to Juventus last October – but the Italian giants only offered him a contract until the end of the season.

In recent years the Old Lady have veered towards basket case territory – something that may put the cool, calm and collected Glasner off – having churned through three managers in 2025 alone.

Yet you’d suspect the appeal of restoring one of Europe’s great institutions to former glory would be hard for the Austrian to ignore. 

Juve currently lie 4th in Serie A and are drifting around the mid-table of the Champions League’s league phase. One would think the club want to start winning trophies again and Glasner could be the answer.

Numerous Italian outlets claim Spalletti’s side have already tried to sign Jean-Phillipe Mateta from Palace in this window, so perhaps an Italian reunion could be on the cards. 

One hurdle is that Glasner doesn’t speak the language, but he has six months to learn. 

Our verdict: The chance to manage in the Champions League while restoring a sleeping giant is a powerful sales pitch – one that could surely tempt Glasner.

4. Liverpool

Another man facing the ire of his fanbase due to his style of football is a certain Arne Slot.

The Liverpool boss went into this season having splashed out £450million – smashing the British transfer record twice – by adding the likes of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak to a squad that had won the Premier League the year before.

But results at the start of the season were awful and, even though results have improved of late, supporters are still bored watching a side that should have been one of the best in English football history.

‘I find it really hard to hear (that football is dull) but I would not completely disagree,’ the Liverpool boss admitted just last week.

‘I want to win as many trophies as I can but I think I am also known for the fact that my teams always try to play attacking football and I can only say they’re trying to do so. 

Glasner could prove an interesting choice for the Liverpool hierarchy. The Austrian has beaten Slot three times in the five matches he’s faced him, losing just once.

Our verdict: Xabi Alonso remains the obvious heir at Liverpool, but Glasner would be mad to turn it down if the Reds came calling.

5. Borussia Dortmund

Having already had tasted success in Germany with Frankfurt and Wolfsburg, the only two options realistically on the cards for Glasner in the Bundesliga now are Bayern Munich or Dortmund.

But with Bayern boss Vincent Kompany thriving in Munich, any move to the Allianz Arena looks unlikely – leaving BVB as the more plausible destination. 

Despite extending manager Nico Kovac’s contract until 2027, Dortmund find themselves 11 points adrift of Bayern in the title race and under mounting pressure to secure a top-four finish, with RB Leipzig and Stuttgart closing in. 

They were also knocked out of the DFB Pokal by Leverkusen and face a tough final two games in the Champions League against Spurs and Inter Milan to secure qualification to the next round.

So, despite the show of faith in Kovac, a sequence of bad results for Dortmund could have them looking for a new manager after all.

And for Glasner, the allure would be obvious. The chance to take charge in front of the famous Yellow Wall remains one of the most compelling invitations in European football.

Our verdict: Glasner would not be overawed by Kompany. Bayern are thriving under the former Burnley boss, but the Austrian would present a serious challenge.
