Brendan Rodgers favourite to replace Oliver Glasner as Crystal Palace boss

Oliver Glasner will leave his role as Crystal Palace manager at the end of the season, and Brendan Rodgers is the early favourite to take over from the Austrian

Oliver Glasner has confirmed his departure from Crystal Palace at the end of this season. The Austrian gaffer’s contract is due to expire in June, and he has chosen not to renew it.

Rumour has it that Glasner is on the shortlist for Manchester United, who are on the hunt for a new permanent manager this summer following the temporary appointment of Michael Carrick for the rest of the season.

Glasner took the reins at Palace in February 2024, succeeding Roy Hodgson after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt. He led the Eagles to FA Cup glory last season and has chalked up 41 victories in his 95 games in charge.

His name has cropped up as a potential candidate for the United job following the recent sacking of Ruben Amorim. Interestingly, Glasner’s preferred 3-4-3 formation mirrors that of Amorim, which could make him an attractive prospect for United as they seek a long-term replacement.

The quest for United’s next boss is spearheaded by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Alongside Glasner, other potential candidates include interim manager Michael Carrick, England boss Thomas Tuchel, and ex-England coach Gareth Southgate, reports Football London.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, were ousted from the FA Cup by non-league Macclesfield last weekend and currently sit 13th in the Premier League ahead of their journey to Sunderland this Saturday. The squad hasn’t tasted victory in their last nine matches across all competitions and is also on the brink of losing captain Marc Guehi, who is nearing a transfer to Manchester City in the January window.

Who’s the favourite for the job?

At present, Brendan Rodgers is tipped as the initial favourite to take over the reins in the summer, with bookmakers William Hill pricing the ex-Liverpool manager at 5/1.

Rodgers boasts an impressive CV, having earned accolades at Swansea City, Celtic and Leicester City. He successfully steered the Swans to the Premier League in the 2010/11 season via the play-offs, and his tenure at Liverpool earned him high praise from Steven Gerrard, who hailed the coach as one of the best in man management.

During two spells at Celtic Park, he clinched the Scottish Premiership four times, the Scottish Cup thrice, and the Scottish League Cup four times.

While at Leicester City, he led the Foxes to an FA Cup triumph and the Community Shield just a few months later. He also navigated the club back into Europe with consecutive Europa League seasons and narrowly missed out on Champions League football twice.

However, he is currently the manager of Saudi Pro League team Al Qadsiah and is contracted until 2028. Therefore, a hefty compensation fee may be required to secure his services.
