Bizarre moment sees Jordan’s goalkeeper left utterly bemused after penalty he saved spins into the back of the net while he celebrates

Jordan’s Under-23 goalkeeper was left looking quite the fool after a spot-kick he initially saved spun into the net while he began celebrating prematurely.

The bizarre incident occurred during Jordan’s quarter-final clash with Japan on Friday in the Under-23s Asian Cup, which is being staged in Saudi Arabia.

The tie in Jeddah saw Jordan take a first-half lead through Ali Ahmad Azaizeh before Japan equalised early in the second thanks to a strike from 23-year-old defender Shusuke Furuya.

Neither side could find the winner meaning that, after a gruelling extra-time, the match went to penalties.

Japan eventually won the shootout 4-2, in part thanks to an error by Jordan ‘keeper Abdel Rahman Suleiman which left viewers ‘rolling off their chairs’.

After the Japanese struck their second spot-kick to the bottom right corner, Suleiman  pulled off a stellar save to deny it from crashing into the back of the net – or so he thought.

As the goalkeeper began celebrating towards his team-mates on the halfway line, the ball – which had deflected vertically off Suleiman – slowly span past the goal-line.

It was a moment which left the Jordan goalkeeper, and everyone watching from home, utterly perplexed.

Amused viewers reacted on Reddit, with many questioning just what Suleiman thought he was doing.

One wrote: ‘Was watching live and rolling off my chair lol.’

‘The look on the Japanese shooter’s face when he sees the ball coming down again, bro is ecstatic,’ another quipped.

While another fan wrote: ‘I don’t understand how this keeps happening at that level. By now there have been so many videos of this exact scenario happening, that every professional GK should be aware, or at least the coaches.’
