Roberto De Zerbi has been linked with the Manchester United head coach role after Ruben Amorim was sacked and the Marseille boss has spoken out on the speculation
Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has addressed speculation connecting him with the permanent head coach position at Manchester United. The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new permanent boss following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.
Former United midfielder Michael Carrick will oversee proceedings as interim head coach until the end of the season, with his focus on delivering Champions League qualification at Old Trafford. The ex-Middlesbrough chief impressed United’s senior figures during discussions and is being supported by coaches Steve Holland and Travis Binnion.
Carrick played a key role in orchestrating United’s commanding 2-0 Manchester derby triumph over Manchester City on Saturday. However, he is not anticipated to remain as the club’s manager beyond the summer as things stand.

One figure being mentioned is former Brighton and Hove Albion manager De Zerbi. The Italian matches the reported requirements from United’s leadership for a boss with Premier League credentials.

Speaking on Tuesday ahead of Marseille’s Champions League clash against Liverpool, De Zerbi has sought to dampen speculation linking him with a departure amid reported interest from United. He said: “My focus is totally on Marseille. I wanted to come here.
“The day before a very important, very crucial game, I have no space in my head to think about other things. I feel very well in this city with these players, with this club.”
De Zerbi confirmed he is set to hold talks with Marseille, adding: “As for the future, we have got to speak in the next month. In the next year, I don’t know.”
United would likely have to thrash out a compensation package with the Ligue 1 outfit to secure the 46-year-old’s services at Old Trafford, should they choose to pursue him. It’s yet to be determined what United’s strategy will be regarding the managerial position come the summer, with numerous Premier League fixtures still remaining before the campaign concludes.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique represents another option that has been floated, whilst Xabi Alonso has also been mooted following his departure from Real Madrid last week. United resume their campaign on Sunday with a trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal as they pursue a top-four finish.
