‘I went viral after chat with Liverpool star – the reaction surprised me’

EXCLUSIVE: Talented polyglot sports broadcaster Alex Aljoe has risen in fame ever since she interviewed then-Liverpool star Luis Diaz in 2024

Alex Aljoe is a name that stands out from the rest. Her ability to speak five languages – English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish – have set her apart from other sports presenters and helped her develop a name in broadcast media.

The 34-year-old began life in England and made languages her passion, studying Spanish and French in high school before moving on to Italian in university. During a year abroad while studying, the polyglot reporter began work with Real Madrid TV and started to stake a claim in the world of sports presenting.

Nowadays, Aljoe can be spotted on the likes of Amazon Prime Video and DAZN, interviewing many famous faces in every language – and even translating on the spot for viewers. In 2025, the reporter led coverage of the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup, hosting in the United States for DAZN.

She also joined ESPN’s on-air team as a presenter for the FA Cup in the States, watching on as drama unfolded across England in the domestic cup competition.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, the talented reporter named just a few moments in her career that have stood out so far. Aljoe said: “Presenting on Spanish television live for the first time when I lived in Madrid, I was so nervous.

“Even though I could speak Spanish fluently, talking live on TV there was an entirely different prospect. I was shaking so much, but it went well. Additionally, the first live translation interview I did for Amazon Prime Video, which was with Luis Diaz after he scored a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen.

“It was just a spontaneous idea at the time as a way to get his reaction knowing he did not speak English, and it turned into a career-defining moment for me. I was completely overwhelmed by the reaction.”

Stars like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gabriel Magalhães and Diaz are just a few to name on the list that Aljoe has surprised with her fluency. When asked who her favourite interviewees had been, the 34-year-old said: “It is so hard to pick just one. I would say Sergio Agüero’s last interview as a Manchester City player, reflecting on his iconic goal at the end of the 2011/2012 season.

“It was my first season working for the Premier League’s global TV channel, and it was such a special interview. Or, perhaps David Beckham – when he returned to Real Madrid’s training ground for first time since he left the club as a player.

“I had heard he was going to be there for an Adidas shoot and so I went on my own mission to find him and I did!”

Aljoe is even working closely with former Match of the Day hero Gary Lineker on The Rest is Football: LaLiga where they run down the latest coming out of the Spanish league. Highlighting their friendly relationship, she added: “Gary is brilliant to work with.

“A true pro and we have a good laugh on the podcast too, even before producer Harry, Gary’s son, hits ‘record’. I look forward to Monday mornings which is when we usually record our LaLiga pod.”
