Earlier this week, Chelsea confirmed that experienced England international Raheem Sterling’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

Since then, the 31-year-old’s representatives have been searching for a new club for their client, with Union Berlin apparently among those approached.

Union Berlin managing director for professional football Horst Heldt confirmed the approach to Sky Germany, but explained that the German capital club chose not to pursue any deal.

“In every transfer window, you’re confronted with names that make you rub your eyes. In this case, it just wasn’t serious, so we didn’t move forward,” Heldt said.

Sterling earned a reported €375,000 per week at Chelsea.
