Liverpool are set to cash in on long-serving defender Joe Gomez this summer, according to a report.
The 28-year-old has been with the Reds since joining from Charlton Athletic as a highly rated youngster in a bargain €4.9 million deal in 2015. More than a decade later, Gomez is a two-time Premier League winner and European champion.
However, it hasn’t always been easy for him. Because of his versatility, he has often been used as a utility man. Particularly under Arne Slot, Gomez has found regular game time hard to come by.
He perhaps saw the writing on the wall when the Dutchman replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024. At the time, the defender decided to follow his long-time manager out the door.
He missed Slot’s first competitive game in charge away at Ipswich because he had been allowed to explore a transfer away by Liverpool. It was reported that Gomez was keen to return to London. However, he failed to find the right move before the deadline and ultimately stayed put.
Gomez to belatedly leave Liverpool
Last summer, it was a similar story. Towards the end of the window, when it looked as though Marc Guehi would join, Liverpool began holding talks with Gomez’s suitors, among them Brighton, Crystal Palace and AC Milan.
Again, though, no move materialised as the deal to sign Guehi collapsed at the last minute. Milan, in particular, were very interested in Gomez, but it was decided on Deadline Day that there was not enough time to complete an international transfer.
With Gomez’s contract expiring in 2027, CaughtOffside now reports that Liverpool will look to belatedly cash in on him this summer. Milan, it is claimed, remain firmly in the mix for signature.
However, Gomez also has plenty of suitors elsewhere. Notably, Bayern Munich are explicitly named as holding an interest in the 28-year-old. Brighton could also return for him, while West Ham may become an option, too, if they manage to stave off relegation.
Milan, though, are currently considered the favourites to sign the versatile defender.
