Erling Haaland injury latest as Man City boss Pep Guardiola gives update

Erling Haaland missed Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Leeds United due to a minor injury sustained in training and Pep Guardiola has provided an update ahead of facing Nottingham Forest

Erling Haaland is feeling ‘much better’ but will undergo assessment following Manchester City’s training session on Tuesday before a decision is made on his availability for the Nottingham Forest clash. Haaland sat out the Leeds trip with a minor training knock sustained on Thursday, and Pep Guardiola was unable to confirm his fitness prospects immediately after that match.

The Norwegian striker remains doubtful for the fixture, though City are hopeful of his inclusion following the weekend’s rest. Similarly, Nico O’Reilly, who hobbled off with an ankle complaint during the 1-0 victory over Leeds, was able to participate in Sunday’s recovery session.

“He feels much better but we didn’t train yesterday. Now we have training and will decide today,” Guardiola said of Haaland in a pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

City dealt well without their talismanic striker, with Antoine Semenyo netting the game’s only goal while playing up front alongside Omar Marmoush and Guardiola didn’t sound too concerned before kick off on the weekend. “Two days ago in training he had some problems and a little injury. Not a big issue but not ready for today,” he said at Elland Road.

Beyond that, City’s injury situation looks encouraging as they pursue silverware this campaign. Jeremy Doku made his return to the matchday squad for the first time in the Premier League encounter at Leeds, whilst Savinho entered as a substitute in the second period for his first outing since sustaining his injury on New Year’s Day.

That leaves Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol as the sole absentees, with Guardiola expressing optimism that Kovacic has resumed training.

“It is a privilege to be in March and we are in all the competitions. It’s a dream,” Guardiola added. “It is a privilege. Last season, we fought but were out of the Champions League and FA Cup. Next Saturday against Newcastle, two games against Real Madrid. If you win, you continue, if you don’t win, holidays in that competition. I am only concerned about that.”

City are aiming to narrow the gap on Arsenal on Wednesday night, with both teams in action simultaneously. City welcome Forest whilst Arsenal journey to Brighton, the team that defeated Forest at the weekend; a five-point difference separates the two sides, although Arsenal have played one match more.

Following Forest, City have two significant journeys to gear up for, with pivotal matches against Newcastle in the FA Cup on Saturday and then the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter in Madrid. Haaland has already found the net at the Bernabeu but is yet to score against Newcastle in four attempts this season.
