Real Madrid fans greet loss with shouts of ‘Florentino resign’

Real Madrid fell to fourth defeat under Alvaro Arbeloa against Getafe on Monday night, a result that leaves Los Blancos four points behind Barcelona in La Liga. Doubts continue about the current Real Madrid squad, but increasingly the finger of blame is not being pointed at the manager.

The latest reports from the Spanish capital cast doubt on the future of Arbeloa beyond the summer, with the Getafe loss accentuating concerns in both the dressing room and the presidential box. If Arbeloa was to move on before nect season, it would be a fourth manager in two years attempting to right the ship.

Real Madrid President called out by Bernabeu

As evidenced by footage from the stands at the final whistle, and reports from Marca, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez was targeted by the fans. Chants of ‘Florentino, resign’ rang out before the loudspeaker kicked in after the game came to an end. There has been criticism of his decision-making at the top of the club, with many feeling the transfer business is not up to standard.

Florentino Perez targeted for a second time

It is the second time that Perez has been targeted by the home crowd this season. The first occurred six weeks ago, following the first half of Real Madrid’s 2-0 home win over Levante, a game which followed their Copa del Rey elimination to Albacete, and their Spanish Supercup final loss to Barcelona.

On that occasion, the players were also targeted, with the likes of Vinicius Junior, Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham the recipients of loud whistles, but this time the frustration was reserved exclusively for Perez. After that game, Arbeloa claimed those chanting were ‘not Real Madrid fans’. Dissent against Perez has been almost unheralded in his second spell. The last time his leadership was publicly questioned in similar fashion before 2026 was a decade before, a sign of just how unimpressed some fans are.
