In an interview with French publication L’Equipe, Mathys Tel has reflected on his development at Bayern Munich following his move from Stade Rennes in the summer.
The 18-year-old feels he has become a more mature player mentally, in terms of his decision-making and style of play.
Asked how he’s changed since joining Bayern, Tel replied:
“In terms of maturity and experience. I manage to push myself when things get tough. It was a pretty quick change. When I first arrived, I wasn’t used to this level. I put myself under pressure.
“At this level, you either adapt or ‘die’. I told myself, “You’re here because you have qualities, you have to have confidence. Now I can shout, encourage my teammates and speak German in training.”
As for his status in the squad, Tel feels he has made a huge leap forward since arriving in Munich.
“I feel like all the other players now. The way I’m perceived has changed. My teammates talk to me a lot and give me advice. We’ve developed a relationship where I feel a lot of trust,” said Tel.
“Joshua Kimmich, for example, is demanding of me. If I misplace a pass in training, he yells at me like I did something crazy. And right after that he comes over and tell me: ‘You know I’m doing this for your own good, I want you to become a top player.'”
