Massimiliano Allegri believes that Napoli are still the favourites to win the Serie A title despite beating them 2-1 in San Siro on Sunday evening, and has predicted how many more points Milan need to reach their goal for 2025-26 season, which he maintains is Champions League qualification rather than the Scudetto.
What Allegri thinks Milan need to reach Serie A top four
Milan reached the top of the Serie A table, where they currently sit level on points with both Napoli and Roma after five matches, thanks to a 2-1 victory over the Partenopei in San Siro on Sunday evening: Alexis Saelemaekers, Christian Pulisic and Kevin De Bruyne provided the goals.
Despite defeating the reigning champions and overtaking them to the top of the table in the process, Allegri insists Napoli are still the most likely side to win the Scudetto come the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
“They are the Scudetto holders, we have to work step by step to improve,” Allegri said during his post-match press conference on Sunday evening.
“The first half was technically solid from both sides, then the penalty brought us down to 10 men in the second half and we defended very well. We were really good. Those who came on gave us a big hand. It was a tough test against a very strong Napoli side,” Allegri said of his side’s performance on the night.
“This team has very good technical players. We still have Leao behind in his condition. He played too much because of what we needed in this game, in fact. We have good alternatives. The important thing is that we all have the same goal: To play in the Champions League next season.
“We’ll enjoy the victory for now, but then we get back to work tomorrow.”
In order to achieve that goal of returning to the Champions League, Allegri believes that Milan need a tally of 76 points, which means 64 more than they currently have after five matches.
“I’ve seen a group of guys who want to work hard and do well, who know that the goal is to get back to the Champions League. To get there, we still need 64 more points, so we have to go slowly, calmly, enjoying victories but without getting too carried away.”
