Amiri hopeful of Germany comeback

Nadiem Amiri has expressed hope of playing for Germany again. “He has played for the German national team. So why not do it again?” says his coach at Mainz, Bo Henriksen.

Since joining Mainz 05 from Bayer Leverkusen in January, Nadiem Amiri has established himself as a pivotal figure at the MEWA-Arena, and played a key role in saving the club from relegation last season.

On Saturday, the 27-year-old once again proved to be a crucial player for Die Nullfünfer, scoring a superb free-kick in their 1-1 draw with Union Berlin.

Amiri himself seems pleased with his performances for Mainz and hopes he has caught the eye of Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Having made a total of five appearances for Germany under Joachim Löw in 2019 and 2020, he remains hopeful of representing his country again.

“It is the dream of every footballer to play for his country, for his national team. I’m convinced I can play at that level,” Amiri said in a post-match interview after Mainz’s draw with Union.

His coach at Mainz, Bo Henriksen, sees no reason why Amiri shouldn’t play for Germany again.

“Amiri was one of the main reasons for Mainz’s success in the second half of last season. He is an incredible footballer,” said the Dane.

“He has played for the German national team. So why not do it again?” asked Henriksen.

However, when asked if he has been in contact with Nagelsmann in recent weeks, Amiri replied “no”.
