Manchester United will have to sell players before they can spend this January and they may be given a lifeline with interest emerging in one of their forgotten stars.

United are keen to strengthen and build around Ruben Amorim’s system but the club’s outlay of more than €200 million in the summer has left the Red Devils operating dangerously close to PSR limitations.

While there is a desire to shift on big earners such as Marcus Rashford, United could recoup smaller fees with the departures of fringe players such as Victor Lindelof and Antony.

However, while interest has been lacking in United’s ideal candidates to be sold, Italian reporter Alfredo Pedulla has claimed that Tyrell Malacia is a target for Como.

The Italian side are managed by former Premier League legend Cesc Fabregas and have already made a number of signings this month as they look to battle relegation from Serie A.

Malacia has only played 92 Premier League minutes since returning from a long-term injury in November and United would be open to his departure for the right price.

Malacia exit could pave way for new arrivals

Malacia arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 as one of Erik ten Hag’s first signings but, despite a bright start, the 25-year-old has made just 24 league appearances, having missed the entirety of last season with a knee injury.

The Dutchman’s current deal has 18 months remaining on it and, while United have an option to extend for a further year, there is an acceptance that trying to recoup the €15 million spent on him would be an ideal outcome.

While there is no indication of Como’s level of interest or the progress of a deal, Malacia’s departure could allow Amorim to sign a more suitable option for his system.

A left wing-back is among the top priorities for United, with the likes of Nuno Mendes and Alvaro Carreras being monitored, but any significant incomings would need to be subsidised by the departures of players such as Malacia.
