Ruben Amorim has insisted that Manchester United “need to improve recruitment” following several years of poor spending in the transfer market.

The Red Devils have spent over €2 billion on new signings since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, yet they have failed to win the Premier League title during that time, while they have only picked up four major trophies.

Amorim is determined for Man Utd to target players who are capable of dealing with the “demands” of playing for the club as he eyes several big-money reinforcements in 2025, including Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres.

Erik ten Hag, his predecessor, was widely criticised for a number of signings across his two-and-a-half year spell at Old Trafford, with Antony (€95m), Casemiro (€70.7m) and Mason Mount (€64.2m) among the expensive mistakes made by the Dutchman.

Amorim, on the other hand, is eager for Man Utd to improve their fortunes in the transfer market this year.

What has Ruben Amorim said?

Speaking ahead of Man Utd’s FA Cup tie against Arsenal on Sunday, Amorim admitted to reporters: “We need to improve recruitment, when we are targeting players that we are sure they can cope with the demands.

“Also, we have to improve our academy, young kids that feel the club in the right way and do some business to have money to invest in the team.

“Our idea is always to keep the best players and to build for this club but I am really happy and like our players especially the guys from the academy.”

Man Utd academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo has been heavily linked with an Old Trafford departure over the past week, with Chelsea currently the frontrunners to sign the England star.

However, Amorim was keen to stress that he wants to keep Mainoo at the club. “My players are always my favourites so I want to keep my players,” the Man Utd head coach added.

“It is a special moment in this club, it is a hard moment but I am really happy Kobbie is improving.”
