Arda Guler reveals why he chose Real Madrid over Barcelona

Arda Guler has opened up on his decision to snub Barcelona last summer.

The Turkish wonderkid has had a difficult start to life at Real Madrid. After injury disrupted his pre-season and integration into Carlo Ancelotti’s side, the youngster has struggled to win himself a place in the team.

Former Fenerbahce teammate Mesut Ozil recently advised him to stay patient, though he also drew attention to the fact that there is always the possibility of following down the same path as Martin Odegaard, who has gone on to become one of Europe’s best midfielders since leaving Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old was given his first start in the famous white shirt against Real Sociedad at the weekend and he paid back the faith by scoring the winner for Ancelotti’s side. After the game, the Italian revealed that Guler is firmly in his plans for next season.

Now, Guler has spoken about his decision to join Real Madrid last summer despite the fact that it looked to all the world as though he was heading to Barcelona.

Long-term project and Modric support

Barcelona sporting director Deco had travelled to Istanbul to negotiate with Fenerbahce and Guler’s camp but the teenager ultimately ended up the Santiago Bernabeu, reportedly leaving Barcelona club chiefs raging.

Speaking to Kafa Sports, Guler has now shed light on why he chose to move to Madrid rather than Catalunya, revealing that the prospect of learning from Luka Modric played a big part.

“When my father called me and told me that Real Madrid wanted me and were interested in me, he was very excited, very happy. It all came a little early for me. That’s why I was so excited.”

“Why did I choose Madrid? Since they are little, many children dream of playing for Madrid, the biggest club in the world. They are like a family and they offered me a long-term project. As soon as we sat down at the table, everything was decided. It was very fast.”

“I watched Madrid videos on YouTube, and now I train with them. Madrid told me that Modric would help me. I was very impressed because he is an incredible player and he is still very important.”
