Arne Slot has confirmed that Liverpool’s business during the upcoming summer transfer window will not be dictated by the Premier League’s current style of play.

The English top flight has reverted to a more physical and direct style this season, with a larger emphasis placed on efficiency from set pieces than in previous campaigns.

In fact, 17.6% of all goals scored in the Premier League this term have been from corners (138 of 783), which is the highest percentage of any season in the competition’s entire history.

Liverpool boasted the worst set-piece record of any club in the division during the first-half of the campaign, however they have scored more goals from dead-ball situations than any other team in the Premier League team in 2026, following the departure of set piece coach Aaron Briggs.

Despite his side’s recent record from corners, Slot took aim at the current state of Premier League football following Liverpool’s win over West Ham United on Saturday and he has now admitted the Reds won’t look to specifically target players who thrive at set pieces this summer.

Arne Slot confirms Liverpool transfer plan

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s midweek clash versus Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday evening, Slot told reporters: “We have our own model over here, as I said many times, and our model is that we sign young players.

“It’s normal for younger players that they have to adapt usually more towards the Premier League, than if you sign players that have already played in the Premier League, that are 27 and are already at the end of their physical [growth].

“But it’s exactly the reason why we have our model, because we believe that players can get better. This club has shown that we can achieve things, as we did six years ago and last season, with our model.”

Slot continued: “A rebuild takes time, a transition takes time, and that’s what we did last summer.

“But we didn’t expect the league to become like it did this season. You couldn’t know this because last season it wasn’t as extreme as it is this season.

“That is usually what happens. If a team has success in a certain area then it is being copied. 10-15 years ago a lot of people wanted to play like Barcelona.

“Let’s hope the one that wins the World Cup has a great style of play, wins it by scoring open play goal after open play goal and doesn’t win it for a different reason.

“[The Premier League is] powerful in the sense that every ball is being kicked forward, especially in the beginning of the season, that was especially against us. That has settled down a little bit in my opinion. in the first 10 games or something, it was just long ball after long ball after long ball, direct style.”

Liverpool have already confirmed the summer signing of Stade Rennais centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, after beating Chelsea to his signature, while they are eager to complete a deal for RB Leipzig starlet Yan Diomande amid their pursuit of at least one new winger.
